Lately, everyone is talking about CBD and it is recommended for the treatment of all possible diseases. You constantly hear and read that CBD is absolutely safe and that anyone can try it. To be able to recommend it to your grandma with a clear conscience, there is an official statement about the health profile of CBD not from just anyone, but from the World Health Organization (WHO).

This should finally remove any remaining concerns.

In June 2018, the WHO published a 28-page report called the “Critical Review Report” on cannabidiol (CBD). In it, they trace the active ingredient CBD through its paces. For this purpose, they not only highlight the possibilities of use but also all risks and side effects. The report also includes a statement on the current state of research.

In short, what do the studies say about CBD and where can it be used in medicine? To save you from having to go through all 28 pages, we have summarized the most important things in this article.

CBD: Let’s Say What It Is Again?

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is a natural component of the cannabis plant, which, unlike THC, is not psychoactive but rather calming and relaxing. Numerous studies, both on humans and animals, deal with this question.

The results show that CBD and THC sometimes have opposite effects: While THC can cause palpitations or increase blood pressure, this effect of CBD is not known. Experiments with animals placed in stressful situations even showed a reduction in increased pulse and blood pressure.

So, is CBD dangerous?

WHO considers CBD to be safe and non-toxic. So, even if not all potential effects of CBD have been fully studied, it can still be said that CBD has a very low so-called toxicity, and the human body reacts well to CBD.

However, studies indicate that patients who are already taking medication for their condition sometimes experience side effects after consuming CBD. If you are already taking medication, always discuss the consumption of CBD with your responsible doctor in advance.

Can You Get Addicted to CBD?

WHO does not classify the potential for abuse of CBD as significant. This means that it does not accept that CBD leads to addiction. In the end, CBD does not have the same properties typical of cannabinoids, such as THC.

So, CBD has a good so-called safety profile and is even safer than table salt, for example. Studies on potential physical dependence caused by CBD consumption in animal studies are also negative. However, controlled studies in humans that could rule out the formation of physical dependence 100% are still lacking.

Which Applications of CBD Have Already Been Studied?

As mentioned earlier, we want to bring you closer to the point where CBD is already being used in medicine. Due to its versatile effects, it is believed that CBD may have positive effects on many mental and physical illnesses. Most of what we know are the effects of CBD on epilepsy.

There is already a drug for this area of application, which, during the WHO report, is in the third phase of clinical trials. Epidiolex is a drug believed to mainly help with Dravet syndrome, a form of early childhood epilepsy. Affected people often do not respond to conventional antiepileptic drugs and suffer from several hundred seizures per month.

The first studies on CBD as a treatment option date back to the 1970s and already show that there may be a connection between CBD use and a reduction in epileptic seizures in experienced patients. Subsequent, more detailed studies with control groups largely confirmed this, although the effect varied from patient to patient. Some of the patients, however, remain almost free of epileptic seizures.

Studies on the effects of CBD on other diseases have not yet advanced as much. There are already studies that ascribe a neuroprotective, antiepileptic, antipsychotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, and even anti-cancer effect to CBD.

Other studies establish a possible therapeutic effect of CBD in schizophrenia and in the fight against drug or tobacco addiction. However, these are mainly preclinical studies. This means that scientifically substantiated statements about how and whether CBD helps here are still not possible.


What we can say is that CBD acts differently in people with different symptoms. And even more importantly: According to WHO, it has a very good safety profile. This means that CBD is not dangerous, and you can simply try it without hesitation.

Here it is already important to be patient. Sometimes it can take weeks for the endocannabinoid system to be supported and built. The older we get, the longer this process can take.
